A 3-dimensional exhibit at the Charlotte Nature Museum that teaches young children what makes an insect an insect: six legs, a body made of three parts–head, thorax, abdomen–and usually having wings or antenna. Working on this project really brought out the kid in me. I loved working with the muralist who could take my Crayola sketches and translate them perfectly onto the walls.
Photo 1: An old farm truck taking crops to market is painted on the wall leading into Insect Alley.
Photo 2: Insects working away in glass boxes installed in the trunk of a fabricated tree.
Photo 3: Am I an insect? To test your insect knowledge, here’s a game. There are two slots on the bottom where you insert one of the hanging laminated drawings of insects and other creepy crawlies. Choosing and inserting an insect drawing, the green checkmark lights up. Selecting something other than an insect and insert it, the red “x” lights up.
This is one of my most favorite projects I've done. Using art in so many different facets to educate was so exciting. Once finished, watching children play the games and try on the giant fly head was the cherry on top!
